This is another story written for my creative writing class as a journal. It is from a book about Harris Burdick.
The Seven Chairs
The master craftsman ended up making seven chairs. Now, these were no ordinary chairs. The chairs were made from a tree that was found in the heart of the rainforest. The tree had grown in a pond that was infused with magical essence. The pond was created when a small meteor struck. The rain filled the pond, and the meteor fills it with magic.
The first chair ended up in Russia. As it turns out, there is a small, independent kingdom high up in the north. The king sits on the chair. This particular chair allows him to turn things invisible. This is why the kingdom remains undiscovered.
The second chair ended up in Australia; Sydney, to be exact, in an opera house. On the furthest away row from the stage sits the chair. This chair allows the person who sits on it to magnify their vision and hearing to make it seem like they are sitting on the front row. Some have reported to be able to see the beads of sweat on the singers’ faces.
The third chair is in Greenland. This chair enables whoever that sits on it to feel extremely comfortable. Cold does not affect them. It is said that a small hovel there has this chair and the family takes turns sleeping and sitting on the chair all day.
The fourth chair was recently found in an ancient temple in South America amid the ruins. Surprisingly, it survived the termite infestation of ’62, which destroyed all other wooden artifacts. It currently resides in a museum dedicated to the artifacts of the ancient civilization that built the ruins. We believe it can travel through time.
The fifth one ended up in France. It was discovered when two priests told a nun some very frightening news in the local cathedral. She sat down heavily on one of the chairs nearby when it suddenly lifted off into the air. She is now known as Saint Aire. The location of the sixth one is unknown.
The seventh chair is currently in a garage sale where Matt is browsing. He sees the chair and, while admiring the master craftsmanship, he buys it. He takes it home and sits on it. Suddenly, he feels very strange. He begins to glow. Matt tries to stand up, but find he can’t. Suddenly, he finds he knows a lot more. He knows where the sixth chair is. He knows that getting it will be a pain. He also knows that it resides on the Moon, and must be found and brought back to Earth.
As it turns out, Matt knows how to get to the chair, but he will need all of the other chairs to accomplish this. He needs the Flying Chair to get to the Moon. He needs the Comfort Chair to stay alive as he travels through space. He needs the Time Chair to find the chair, which is buried beneath the lunar surface. He needs the Magnifying Chair to see it after he lands. He needs the Invisible Chair to make it to the surface intact. And, he needs the Omniscient Chair to know where to look. Even with all of these, the trip will be dangerous. He doesn’t know what may be there or what has the chair. He does know that the chair must be returned to Earth.
So, Matt plans the largest burglary of all time. He first goes after the Time Chair in the museum, since it is the closest. By sitting on the Omniscient Chair, he knows when he can steal it. It is a simple robbery since the museum has lax security. Soon, Matt is on his way to the Flying Chair in France. It is even easier than the museum. Matt sits on the chair and is away to the other chairs. Through the Omniscient Chair, Matt knows he can stack the chair and sit on them and gain the power of the chairs. He flies to the next chair, in Greenland. Matt doesn’t like to take the chair, but it is necessary. He promises to return it later after he retrieves the sixth chair. He then flies to Australia to find the Magnifying chair. He simply flies down and places the chair on his other chairs. Matt pauses and enjoys the opera, amazed at the magnification.
Matt goes to Russia to find the Invisible Chair. As it turns out, the Magnifying Chair helps him see the invisibility. He goes and begs the king to give him the chair. He promises to return it after he finds the sixth chair. The king reluctantly agrees. Matt now has all the chairs he needs to get to the Moon. He begins flying upward, directly towards the moon, all the while using the Invisibility Chair to remain undetected and the Comfort Chair to survive the vacuum of space. He reaches it within minutes. He activates the power of the Time Chair to rewind time to when the chair first arrived on the Moon. He combines the Magnifying Chair’s power with the Omniscient Chair’s power and successfully locates the sixth chair.
The chair is suddenly surrounded by several small creatures of various sizes. They grab the chair and begin to walk off, carrying it in the air. Matt swoops down and lands his chair on the sixth chair. He has no idea what it will do, and neither does the Omniscient Chair. He lands and is instantly filled with a strange feeling. He looks around at the small creatures. He flies off suddenly with the seven chairs and back to his time and his planet.
He returns all the chairs to their rightful places, returning the seventh chair to its previous owner, the world-wide chess champion, leaving himself with only the sixth chair. He decides to name it the Master Chair.
You see, the master craftsman was about to die when he made the sixth chair and the seventh chair. He decided to imbue that chair with all of his skills. That master craftsman was also a master at several other skills, including Magic. The Master Chair lets whoever that sits in it to possess all the skills of the master craftsman. Matt has taken on the new responsibility. Matt has become the new master craftsman.
