This is another Harris Burdick story written for my Creative Writing Class.
The Creature Under the Rug
Two weeks passed and it happened again. I tried to surmount it, to defeat it, but, unlike last time, it didn't disappear. It wreaked havoc on my living room. It pushed over tables, overturned sofas, broke lamps, and even carried off shoes. It grew bigger and bigger until the rug could no longer contain. I quickly left the premise before it decided it was hungry. However, I noticed a lump suddenly appear in my perfect lawn. It was a small lump, no larger than a lamp. It began to move cautiously around my lawn. I grabbed a golf club that my neighbor's children so rudely discarded on my lawn and gave the lump a good, hard whack on the head. It sank beneath the turf. I smiled, for surely this was solved. I went inside my house, ready to enjoy the rest of my life in peace and prosperity. A few weeks after the lump disappeared, I suspected it to be gone permanently. However, I was horribly mistaken.
Over the next few days, I noticed several curiosities happen to my lawn. Gnomes would mysteriously disappear in the night. Turf would be overturned. My sidewalk even began to crack. I foolishly dismissed these as childish nieghborhood pranks. Then, one night, while I was calmly asleep, I heard a bump in the night. My whole house shook. I sat up, dazed and wondering if I was still asleep. It happened again. I flew to my window and saw a giant, fat lump in the ground. It rushed towards my house again. My house almost tipped that time. I ran outside just in time to see my wonderful Victorian house fall and crumble. I sat on my lawn in shock and amazement. The bump suddenly rushed towards me.
