A Review of Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil
I recently discovered that Hoodwinked Too! was streamable on Netflix, as well as Hoodwinked! itself. Like any normal human being, I decided to binge watch both. Having never seen the sequel, I was excited and nervous to see what had been done to one of my all-time favorite movies. Unfortunately, sequels have the reputation of being awful compared to the first movie. Even more unfortunate, sequels tend to live up to that reputation.
Many of the elements that I loved in Hoodwinked! were at least partially present in the sequel. I wouldn't say that the sequel was a complete flop, but it was definitely not the same quality level as the first.
Where to begin? I felt like the writers had tried too hard to be funny. There were some very funny jokes, but many of them felt forced. The sequel tried to put more of the humor from the first movie into the second, but instead of letting it flow like it did in the first, they forced it out of the characters.
The animation style had changed between movies. It made the characters look and move differently, which caused it to feel like it didn't belong. The voices and some of the characterization also changed, causing an even further disassociation from Hoodwinked! The two movies do not flow together at all, which was a major problem for me. I never got used to the new look, and I disliked it from the start.
The story line was great. I think it was a good idea for a sequel, but overall, the writing was more forced than funny. It had great potential, but it never achieved it.
It's not the kind of movie I would want to watch over and over again, unlike the original. I don't recommend watching it (in fact, the first thing I did after I had finished it was tell my friend who likes Hoodwinked! to not bother watching the sequel). You might find it enjoyable, but I don't think it was worth the hour and one-half spent on it.
